Finished my first book of the year on new year’s day is a bit of an achievement, but I did start it a month or so ago.
The book focuses on his last year as a professional cyclists and insights into life in the peloton.
Not quite as satisfying read as the Fall and Rise of David Miller but fascinating none the less.
It was a nice change to read something lighter for a change, disappointingly I had forgotten that not only had I read this before I had also watch the film adaptation.
Still it is a good story so it was enjoyable to reread it.
I have really enjoyed reading this book, it has been nice to read something that is a little bit challenging. Neil is good at grand ideas and weaving in a lot of scientific ideas and big concepts, somehow in all that he manages to leave enough space to actually tell a story.
Now fortunately it is a lot shorter than The Baroque Cycle, but it still very much a Neil Stevenson novel. It just has he same texture somehow, it was very comforting.
It is a book that I will have to read again, something that I knew very early on in the book, there is a lot going on, and I was well aware that I wasn’t catching on to all of its cleverness.
I am still to read the ancillary maths which is part of the appendix, I will also have to read the very long references website.
I’m oddly looking forward to this extra homework. It will be good to get a better understanding of the concepts and ideas.
It has also triggered the idea that I want to make myself a clock..
But there is a special place in Hell for people who put stickers on books that don’t come off..
People who use stickers that damage the book, there is no punishment strong enough..
I picked up this book for a quid from the supermarket, it documented Brad’s 2012 year of success. It was a bit light on detail for me and just too fluffy.
Hey it had fun facts, and bold words to indicate that they were in the glossary. Really complicated cycling words like peloton. So it was never going to be a the greatest cycling biography.
But it was an easy enough read, but mostly reminded me that I really want to read David Millar’s book.
